Homemade rosemary salt is what ignited my love for this herb AND focaccia bread- let me explain! Rosemary has been on the backburner of my garden so to speak. She was there but not being appreciated for her full potential. Until one evening I randomly decided I wanted to learn how to make focaccia bread. The recipe called for yup you guessed it rosemary! Out of the oven came the most delicious focaccia bread I have ever tried. It was perfection the combination of olive oil, crunchy but fluffy bread, garlic, salt and rosemary.. it was a flavor explosion! That left the house smelling like a gourmet bakery. I guess I was expecting this herb to be pungent and bitter to the pallet but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Once cooked or baked down this herb takes on a earthy minty lemonish flavor that is delightful and pairs well in so many dishes.
In my defense the earliest memory I have of this herb was at my grandmothers house. She had sprigs of rosemary infusing in alcohol for sore joints. I was quite aware of its potent medicinal benefits but completely ignored its culinary uses!
So now I find myself wanting to explore more dishes where this delicious herb can shine. Having this rosemary salt on hand has allowed me to play around with this versatile herb in the kitchen and I’m so glad she is now getting the recognition she deserves! I’ve tried it on steak, potatoes and each time its just as delicious. Have fresh rosemary or dried? Yup both can be used for this simple yet delicious addition to your pantry. Let me tell ya this salt is easy to make and would also make a great gift! Seems like a fancy herb infused salt you could pick up at a specialty store!
Gathering ingredients
To make this homemade rosemary salt you will need just a few ingredients and with the help of a food processor or a blender you can whip this up in no time. Go for a coarse good quality salt that will result in a good size grains even after processed. I wouldn’t recommend using table salt as it will grind up to a really fine powder. Using fresh rosemary from the garden? One extra step will be added after combining all your ingredients place salt mixture on a baking tray to dry off and let the rosemary oils be absorbed by the salts. This will only take a few hours and can be stored after.
I hope that this homemade rosemary salt will make you fall in love with this sometimes forgotten herb!
